The Boats

RG65

The RG 65s,is the oldest new class in the American Model Yachting Association. These “right size” pocket rockets are big enough to sail like a real boat, small enough to fit rigged in a tiny car, and light enough to provide competitive, action-packed racing. They are also economical: you can build a competitive boat, radio and all, for well under $200. The RG 65 class is defined by a very simple set of limits on basic dimensions and characteristics of a boat: a monohull that is 65 centimeters (25.6 inches) long, with a rig no higher than 110 centimeters (43.3 inches) and carrying a maximum of 2250 square centimeters (348.7 square inches) of sail area. You can have two radio channels and three rigs of different sizes to cope with varying winds. And that’s about it.

Soling One Meter

The Soling is a low-cost, kit-based one-design class targeted toward getting new skippers and hobbyists involved in model yachting. The Soling One Meter Class philosophy is to provide a low-cost one-design model suitable for introducing newcomers to the hobby, while offering enough performance to keep long-time model sailors interested. All aspects related to performance are intended to be restricted to what can be achieved by building the kit straight from the manufacturer's plans. Other aspects not affecting performance are not as strictly controlled.

The Soling One Meter Class was introduced to the AMYA in 1993. Since that time it has become the largest class in the organization, with just over 800 boats registered in late 2006. The Soling One Meter also qualifies in the open design US One Meter Class.

Thunder Tiger Victoria

One of the latest entries in the AMYA one design fleet is a good performer for experienced sailors as well as excellent entry level sailors. Available as a complete kit, minor modifications to the quite detailed instructions can be made to achieve full performance of this boat.  At 31 inches (780 mm) long, with an overall rigged height of 54 inches, this 4.5 lb. 'heavyweight' can travel everywhere fully rigged in most vehicles. It can be tuned to correctly sail in winds over well over 20kts. The Victoria will sail with 8 inches water.  Total investment is under $300.

IOM
International One Meter

The International One Metre class is the fastest-growing class in the world. This class is distinct and different in purpose from the US One Meter class, and complements the International Marblehead Class as a simpler, less expensive boat. The International class has a one-design rig, and has minimum weights on the keel and overall, and restricts the hull material. The net effect of these differences is that the typical cost spiral of lighter weight, and more expensive materials and manufacturing processes, is arrested. This allows amateur designers and builders a chance to design and build with little concern that they are building in a disadvantage due to weight. This is a feature not found in any existing AMYA class, and is one of the reasons that the class is so popular around the world.
